Sea faring thieves are caught between two warring gangs of pirates, who are trying to catch a grey whale that in a freak accident during a battle, swallowed the Emperor's Royal Seal. Soon, amidst the flashing swords and flying cannonballs, love is blooming between the beautiful pirate leader, Yeo-wol (played by the amazing Son Ye-Jin, THE LAST PRINCESS), and the rapscalion bandit Jang Sa-jung (Nam-gil Kim, recently in OKAY MADAM, and featured in the highly anticipated upcoming action disaster film EMERGENCY DECLARATION), and the stakes are rising as Yeo-wol's old mentor, the overthrown So-ma (Lee Kyeong-yeong, STEEL RAIN, MONSTRUM) joins the pursuit, looking for both the bounty and revenge upon is ex-acolyte.
With touches of ROBIN HOOD, CUTTHROAT ISLAND, MOBY DICK, and PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN, writer/director Seok-hoon Lee's THE PIRATES walks the same line between comedy, romance, and adventure, and is a solid entertainment that would serve as a good gateway film for younger audiences, and fans of Disney as well, in particular the more mature-kids end of the Buena Vista live action stuff.
I'm looking forward to the up-coming sequel,
THE PIRATES 2: GOBLIN FLAG, which seems to amplify all the elements of
the original.
